My ex-husband was a big time investor.
He loved reading investor books like Rich Dad, Poor Dad and The Millionaire Next Door.
He was always on me to be smart with money. I saved for retirement, put money in the stock market, and then got pushed into purchasing a rental property. My ex loved rental properties. He was always looking for the next one. He loved being a landlord and getting calls. He would leave at the drop of a hat to redo a floor, fix a washing machine, and mow a lawn. He pushed me heavily into doing what he did. Turns out I am not a good landlord. I hated answering calls, making repairs, and working for someone else. I looked into hiring a property manager but for a single property it wasn’t the smart decision financially. For a long time I thought I was just stuck. After my husband and I divorced the first thing I did was start looking into selling the property. The real estate agent I worked with was awful. She wanted me to make a bunch of repairs and was terrible at finding buyers. I ended up dropping her and talking matters into my own hands. I found a cash home buyer in Jacksonville, Florida that was willing to make a deal. Selling a rental property with tenants in it wasn’t tricky at all. The guy was totally fine with giving me a fair price. It was so worth it. I am glad that I now only have money in the stock market.
